This is, in effect, what every one of us does (albeit to varying degrees) by living off of fossil fuel and other low entropy resources, with no thought of what is to befall either the rest of the biosphere or those to come after us. While state tyranny is the overt focus of the novel, there is a deeper and darker core, a sense in which it is a meditation on Shakespeare, Darwin and Nietzsche: where no assumptions about the benignity of human nature are made, where everyone has their breaking point, where everyone, no matter what their pain threshold, will under some circumstances seek to throw off their own suffering onto someone else. We are therefore unlikely to witness the specific institutional features of 1984.īut this is to confine oneself to a sanitised left/right or liberal/conservative reading of the text, where basically decent people are oppressed and corrupted by a fascist/communist state. Whether or not the environmental debacle and the scramble for resources will lead to generalised warfare is a uncertain, but energy-hungry totalitarianism (like any other form of large-scale social organisation) will not survive the collapse. Orwell was perhaps more of a cornucopian than an ecological pessimist: the material deprivations of 1984 are the product of nuclear devastation and the subsequent perpetual war footing maintained in Oceania by the Party (and mirrored in the two other super-states) rather than of underlying scarcity. Without wishing to belabour the obvious, it is perhaps worth just considering the second of these two short sentences, especially in relation to the unfolding catastrophe. The point is not that only these few words of (English) discourse are necessary, but rather that, as the great and largely moribund mass of our civilisations' verbiage falls away, these words should, as far as possible, be preserved – at least if we or any other conscious entity is to have a hope of understanding itself. To be or not to be (that is the question)Īdmittedly, reducing the whole of non-technical English discourse to these few words may be slightly tendentious: even from our own vantage point, the first quotation is incomplete when removed from the rest of Hamlet's soliloquy, which itself is seated within a Christian and Classical tradition, while the second phrase only acquires its full force in the depths of Ministry of Love – whose workings, while intuitively accessible to an honestly introspecting consciousness, are only fully to be appreciated within a broad (and thus verbally mediated) understanding of psychology, philosophy and civilisation. A curtailment of the energy input will inevitably lead to a reduction in loquacity, and in this context one might wish to consider what should, if at all possible, be preserved.Īs far as English is concerned, and leaving aside technical and genuinely scientific speech, such as that concerning crop rotation, forestry management, electricity generation, the long-term storage of radioactive isotopes and such like, only ten (or perhaps fourteen words) are truly essential: While the energy demanded by our linguistic productions is relatively low in comparison with other activities (flying, driving, shopping, warfare, space exploration etc) – the sheer quantity of the speech and text we produce leads to a not inconsiderable energy consumption (whether this be for hard copy, virtual creation and storage, or even just to generate the ATP to drive our neocortices). Just as the alcoholic, the junkie, the gambler or the gamer will (provided their own needs have been met) insist on sharing their pastimes with those around them, so too does the talker or the writer seek to elicit more speech and more writing. As with other addictions, there is a tendency for prolixity to engender more of the same. We are talkative creatures – and our loquaciousness obviously extends to our writing.

GetFilesDir() and getExternalFilesDir() and getExternalFilesDirs() are still available but files stored on those directories are deleted when my app is uninstalled. Besides still this is not what Google Chrome does. But this is just a patch for developers in order to gain time until they make changes and adapt their code. NULLĪdding requestLegacyExternalStorage="false" as an attribute of Application label of my AndroidManifest.xml. I've also tried to get _CONTENT_URI or _CONTENT_URI and save a file by using (), but what a coincidence although they are annotated as they in fact return. But this does not create a directory but a file. Or again by using ACTION_CREATE_DOCUMENT, save the Uri that I get in onActivityResult() and use grantPermission() and getContentResolver().takePersistableUriPermission(). What an ugly activity to ask user for permission, isn't it? Even though this is NOT what Google Chrome does. I = sm.getPrimaryStorageVolume().createOpenDocumentTreeIntent() Get grant access using SAF at the beginning of the app with an uri pointing to any directory for download contents: StorageManager sm = (StorageManager) context.getSystemService(Context.STORAGE_SERVICE) But am I supposed to open this Intent on every file? My app can download chat files automatically being on background. An Activity is always opened to ask user where to place the file. Open SAF with an ACTION_CREATE_DOCUMENT Intent to ask for permission but apparently there's no way to open it silently. I have read android for developers documentation, lots of questions on Stackoverflow, blog posts over the Internet and Google Groups but still I haven't found a way to keep doing exactly the same as in Android 9 nor even a solution that plenty satisfies me. I have been googling for some days already how apps can download a file directly to Download directory on Android 10 (Q) without having to ask user where to place it, the same way Chrome does. But then I analyzed Chrome and it targets Android 10 without using requestLegacyExternalStorage. I first analyzed Whatsapp to see how they achieve it but they make use of requestLegacyExternalStorage attribute on AndroidManifest. Impossible? but then why Google Chrome or other browsers are able to do that? They in fact still download files to Download directory without asking user in Android 10. In Android 9 or lower I directly download those files to Download directory, but that's now impossible in Android 10 without showing an Intent to the user to ask where to download them. Lets say I'm developing a chat app that is able to share with others ANY kind of files (no mimetype restriction): like images, videos, documents, but also compressed files like zip, rar, apk or even less frequent types of files like photoshop or autocad files, for example. In honor of the last day of the school year, here are 16 quotes for your letter board that can be appreciated by students, teachers, and parents alike! If you’re a teacher, grades are done! And if you’re a parent, summer plans are made (maybe)! We’re all ready to enjoy ourselves for the next few months and then start the school year all over again in the Fall! It’s the day to get our yearbooks signed and clean out our lockers. On the last day of school, it’s time to say bye to all of our friends, classmates, and teachers. But it’s also the beginning of the rest and relaxation we all need and then another new school year, which you’ll enter a little older, a little wiser, and maybe a little more tan from your Summer travels. Thomas Carlyle The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. It’s the end of something and endings are often a little sad. Whatever grade you’re in and whatever kind of school you attend, the last day of school is bittersweet. Sounds like a good tradeoff, if you ask us. You must learn to stop thinking in terms of beginnings and endings, successes and failures, and begin to treat everything in your life as a learning experience. And now we’re ending it with flat erasers and torn notebooks, but also with closer friendships and a lot more knowledge in our heads. We started the year with sharpened pencils, new crayons, a fresh haircut, and a positive attitude. There are tests to take, homework to forget (senior-itis, amiright?), and class parties to enjoy!
If you have anti-virus software, make sure to white-list Dragonframe so that it can access the camera.įirst of all, it is super important to understand that the live view and high-resolution images are different. Anti-virus software blocking camera detection. If nothing can see your camera, try using a different USB cable and port, and possibly try your camera with another computer. If the operating system or other programs can see your camera, but Dragonframe does not, you should definitely send in a camera test (see Dragonframe Help menu) and also contact support. If you have Nikon Camera Control Pro 2, you can check that as well. If you have a Canon camera, you can also use “Canon EOS Utility” on either platform to detect the camera. On Windows, you can see if the camera connects when you plug it in, since Windows always pops up a message for new devices. If you are on a Mac, use “Image Capture”, which is an application that comes with the computer and is located in the “Applications” folder. Then you will want to verify that the computer itself can see the camera. Or set the lens to the desired zoom for the shot, and turn the camera off and on.įirst, make sure your camera is supported by visiting the Camera Support page, taking care to note which versions of Dragonframe support the camera (if any). Changing the zoom affects the focus range. This feature does not work on a shot that also zooms. Dragonframe can program the focus if you create an axis in ARC and set the Connection to ‘Digital Focus’. Then verify that when you take a picture it does not open and close.įocus Programming: This also requires an RF lens and Dragonframe 5. Verify that it is closed during live view. You can verify by choosing a fairly closed aperture, like f/22, and looking into the lens. The feature is always on in Dragonframe 5. This prevents potential flicker from the aperture opening and closing repeatedly. You must use an RF lens and set it to ‘MF’.Īperture Lock: The camera keeps the lens closed during video assist and while capturing photos. HD Live View: The live view (video assist) is doubled from 960×640 to 1920×1280.įocus Peaking: The camera shows which parts of the image are in focus with bright colored pixels. While the various outfits and garments are creative in their own way, there are several scenes where things like cloaks would clearly be a hindrance to any actual combat. The series features some decent animation, but the design principle impinges on this to a degree, partly because of the bishounen aspect of the show, but mainly because of the costumes. On the plus side the lack of care with the storyline isn't really reflected in the look of the show, and DenYuuDen has some nice, imaginative scenes that really show what ZEXCS are capable of if they put their backs into it. One has to wonder what moment of "genius" would persuade director Kawasaki Itsuro and series composer Yoshimura Kiyoko to make such a disjointed narrative. Better yet, ZEXCS could have followed the example set by Satelight when they made Guin Saga, and only adapted a portion of the story to ensure there would be a continuous flow to the plot. While there are some anime that get away with summarily stringing together disparate events, it would have been better for everyone if they at least made the effort to stick to the story. The heart of the problem is simply that ZEXCS, like many other studios, have made a screenplay that is nothing more than a "cut and paste" rendition of the original source material. This is exacerbated by the constant mood swings that occur from one episode to the next, and the addition of seemingly random comedy scenes give the viewer the sense that even the show itself has no idea what's going to happen next. The narrative suffers from a distinct lack of timely explanations, and events can lead the audience on a merry dance as they struggle to keep up with the storyline. Viewers may often find themselves wondering how a particular situation came about, and while there are efforts to tie up certain loose ends, these are nothing more than papering over the cracks. The main issues with Denstsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (DenYuuDen), are the lack of coherency with the story and the constantly changing pace of the plot. This in itself isn't a bad thing though, as these staples are often used to drive home a particular point, or as support for the main storyline.Īnd this anime really does need the support. The pair have been tasked with finding and acquiring the legendary artifacts known as the Relics of Heroes, which lie hidden in various places across the continent of Menoris.Īs with any fantasy tale there's an element of derivation inherent in the plot which results in several very familiar scenarios being played out over the course of the series. Accompanying him on his journey is the warrior and perpetual dango addict Ferris Eris, a woman who may be a genius with a sword, but is pretty clueless with almost everything else (except dango). The story begins with an attack by the Nelphan army on the person of Ryner Lute, a layabout who is on a mission for his trusted friend, boss, and cause of all of his problems, King Sion Astal of Roland. Now aside from mild curiosity at the obvious addiction to using the words "legend" and "hero" in some manner, one has to wonder if the anime adaptation can really live up to the popularity of the franchise. eleven volume light novel series by Kagami Takaya was published in Dragon Magazine from February 2002 until October 2006 and has spawned a sequel (The Legend of the Great Heroes of Legend), and two spin offs (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes Anyway, and The Legend of the Black Fallen Hero), as well as being adapted as a drama CD, a PSP game, a manga, and the recent anime rendition. It's actually surprising how many people don't know the meaning or usage of the word, but rather than comment on the failure of education systems, let's have a look at how "epic" applies to an anime like Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (or The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, whatever floats your boat). Take "epic" for example, and think about all of the occasions where the term has been applied as a colloquialism that simply means "I enjoyed it", "it was very good", or some other sentiment along those lines.
